Reading Mentors, ordinary Kansas Citians who give 40 hours year, driving to a school, walking into a classroom of elementary students and simply reading for 30 minutes one lunch hour a week are the engine that drives Lead to Read KC.
More than 90 percent of Lead to Read KC Reading Mentors surveyed ranked their volunteer experience at least four out of five stars.
Here’s what they’re saying about our program:
“I like being a reading mentor because it feeds my soul. I know I am helping every week, reading and listening in a fun way.”
– Virginia Battoglia, Commerce Bank
“We make reading something the students enjoy and look forward to. It can be hard to break away from work when you’re busy, but it’s well worth it, and you come back to work inspired.”
– Laura Berry, Black & Veatch
“Getting to see a kid’s eyes light up while reading a new book is a phenomenal feeling!”
– Josh Linton, Commerce Bank
We surveyed READERS after the full year experience in the spring of 2012 and here is what we found out. READERS LOVE IT. READERS SEE IMPRESSIVE GAINS IN STUDENT READING LEVELS. READERS ARE ENGAGED.
