Vision and Mission Statement:
- Mission: To improve third grade literacy by mobilizing community volunteers to read one-on-one with children in Kansas City-area classrooms on a weekly basis.
- Vision: By 2020, every urban child educated in the Kansas City area will be read to each week by a Reader.
Lead to Read is a donor-funded program that’s free to kids in Kansas City-area urban schools* – where kids and volunteers bond over books.
Here’s how it works:
Lead to Read connects trusted, caring adult volunteers (called Readers) from every walk of life with kids in grades 1 through 4. Once a week, for 30 minutes, Readers and kids explore the world by reading books provided by the children’s teachers, in the safety and security of an elementary school classroom.
That’s it. There’s no prep and no take-home work. Just read with a child for 30 minutes, once a week.
Together, we can achieve Lead to Read’s heartfelt goal: To inspire kids to love to read and – and to let them know that someone cares.
*Lead to Read complies with all rules and regulations of all participating school districts.
