What We Do

Vision and Mission Statement

  • Mission:  To improve third grade literacy by mobilizing community volunteers to read one-to-one with children in Kansas City-area classrooms on a weekly basis.
  • Vision:  By 2020, every urban child educated in the Kansas City area will be read to each week by a Reader.

Lead to Read KC is a donor-funded program that’s free to students in Kansas City-area urban schools* – where students and volunteers bond over books.

Here’s how it works

Lead to Read KC connects trusted, caring adult volunteers (called Reading Mentors) with students in grades one through three. Once a week, for 30 minutes, Reading Mentors and students explore the world by reading books provided by the students’ teachers, in the safety and security of elementary school classrooms.

That’s it. There’s no prep and no take-home work. Just read with a child for 30 minutes, once a week.

Together, we can achieve Lead to Read KC’s heartfelt goal: to create a community of readers, one lunch hour at a time.

*Lead to Read KC complies with all rules and regulations of all participating school districts.
