What We Do

Lead to Read KC is a literacy program for Kansas City-area urban schools, where children and volunteers bond over books.

Our mission is to support the social, emotional and reading skills that are foundational for student success by mobilizing community volunteers to read with students in elementary schools.

Here’s how it works

Lead to Read KC connects trusted, caring adult volunteers (called Reading Mentors) with students in grades kindergarten through three. Once a week, for 30 minutes, Reading Mentors and students explore the world by reading books.

That’s it. There’s no prep and no take-home work. Just read with a child for 30 minutes, once a week.

Together, we can achieve Lead to Read KC’s heartfelt goal: to create a community of readers, one lunch hour at a time.

Lead to Read KC complies with all rules and regulations of all participating school districts and charter schools.
