Lead to Read KC celebrates World Read Aloud Day

Martha ConradtFeb. 3, 2021

Happy World Read Aloud Day! Reading is one of the most important skills a child needs to have a happy, productive life and successful career.

There are many benefits of reading aloud:

  • Expanded vocabulary
  • Increased reading comprehension
  • Increased fluency
  • Improved listening skills
  • Broader knowledge and awareness of a variety of topics
  • Greater skill as an independent reader

And, did you know that 83 percent of children aged 6-17 say being read to is something they either love or like a lot*

To encourage children to keep reading while they’re away from the classroom, Lead to Read KC partnered with KMBC 9 News to create a community read-aloud video. Check out Haley Harrison and Len Jennings of KMBC, Mayor Quinton Lucas and other Kansas City VIPs as they read a super-silly book!

World Read Aloud Day is celebrated annually on the first Wednesday in February. You can learn more about World Read Aloud Day here.

Thank you to our Reading Mentors and Community Partners for all you do to support Lead to Read KC’s mission to support the social, emotional and reading skills that are foundational for student success!
